🌍 The cerrado has two seasons: rain and dry
Unlike other biomes, the cerrado of Chapada dos Veadeiros does not follow the four seasons on the standard calendar. Here everything is defined by two main periods: rainy and dry, with two transition months at each end that blend both worlds at once.
Lush vegetation, full rivers, mild weather, deep green. Waterfalls at peak flow and beauty.
Arid climate, cold nights, hot days, crystal pools. Clear sky — perfect for stargazing.
April and October are transition months — often the most surprising for visitors, combining traits of both seasons at the same time.
🌧️ Rainy season: October to April
The rainy season turns Chapada into a deep-green paradise. Cerrado vegetation wakes with full force, rivers reach their maximum flow and waterfalls swell dramatically. Water feels warmer to the touch and the weather stays mild: morning sun, clouds through the day and occasional afternoon showers.
Unlike what many assume, it does not rain all day. Showers are often localized — it may pour at one waterfall while another a few kilometres away stays sunny. Long steady rain is less common but happens. On “invernada” days, low fog and fine drizzle create a mystical mood only Chapada delivers.
- Flash flood risk: sudden surges after rain upstream. Always use a guide at river sites.
- Hidden currents: some of the prettiest pools hide pulls you cannot see from the surface.
- Slick wet rocks: higher slip risk — grippy shoes are essential.
- Vehicle bogging: dirt roads get rough — prefer 4x4 or transfer with a guide.
- Muddy trails: guides know daily conditions and adjust the route.
☀️ Dry season: April to October
The dry season feels almost desert-like: very cold at night and very hot by day. Temperature swings are wide — frosty mornings under 10°C and scorching afternoons above 35°C. Cool winds from the hills arrive with winter; vegetation turns the golden-earth tones of dry cerrado.
In return, natural pools grow clearer and more transparent, with full visibility to the bottom. Trails firm up. The cloudless sky is ideal for stars. Dust on unpaved roads is the main drawback — keep car windows closed on transfers.
Intense drought can dry up seasonal waterfalls such as Abismo Falls. Wildfire risk is also real. Check with a local guide which sites are safe and accessible before you go.
🌸 After the rain: the chuveirinho bloom
One of Chapada’s most unique experiences happens at the rain–dry transition: the chuveirinho bloom. Paepalanthus speciosus — chuveirinho or “palipalan” — carpets the rupestrian fields in white between April and July, peaking in May.
This is the setting where photographer Márcio Cabral was recognised by National Geographic, capturing an iconic shot: chuveirinho under the arc of the Milky Way — an image that sums up Chapada’s magic in this season, and an experience you can live too.
